Ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation had the pleasure of welcoming Zonta Monaco for an evening dedicated to raising awareness, fostering dialogue, and encouraging concrete action against gender-based violence.
The event featured Lucile Peytavin, historian and author of the acclaimed book Le coût de la virilité (The Cost of Virility), who presented striking data on the economic and social impact of violent and risky behaviours predominantly committed by men. Her presentation shed light not only on the financial repercussions of these behaviours but also on the cultural norms that sustain them.
Drawing from her research, Peytavin explained that behaviours culturally associated with traditional masculinity impose an enormous financial burden on society. In France alone, she estimates that these costs reach approximately €95 billion per year, a figure that sparked reflection among attendees about the hidden price of virility. She further highlighted how public policies and education can contribute to reducing these behaviours and their consequences.
According to Peytavin, if men adopted behaviours statistically more common among women (such as lower involvement in violent crime and fewer risky activities) a substantial share of these tens of billions could be saved each year. Such a shift, she suggested, would not only benefit public finances but also contribute to a more harmonious and safer society for all.
Zonta Monaco’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and fostering a safer, more equitable world was evident throughout the evening.
