Peace & Sport

The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation supports the Monaco-based organisation Peace & Sport, which was founded in 2007 by Modern Pentathlon Olympic Medallist and World Champion Joël Bouzou. Neutral and independent, Peace & Sport uses sport and its values as an instrument for peace. It benefits from the high patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

“Friendly Football Day” in Cyprus

The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation and Peace & Sport joined forces in March 2019 to organize a bi-communal “Friendly Football Day”, with the support of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The aim of the event was to promote dialogue, understanding and friendship through sport.

Peace & Sport President Joël Bouzou, Vice-President and football legend Didier Drogba and Stelios Philanthropic Foundation founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou were present at the “Friendly Football Day”, which was also attended by political leaders from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The communities were invited to rally around the positive values of football.

The Family Football Day took place in the bi-communal village of Pyla. In the morning, Didier Drogba and three-time karate world champion Laurence Fischer led peace-through-sport activities for children. Later, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot football clubs took to the pitch, first playing against each other and then in mixed teams. More than 1000 children, spectators, athletes and officials raised a white card in Pyla stadium as a gesture of inclusion and peace.
