Sir Stelios was born in Greece from Cypriot parents and became best known for starting easyJet in 1995. His late father Loucas Haji-Ioannou, a shipping magnate moved to Monaco from Greece in 1989 and ever since then the Haji-Ioannou family have been resident in Monaco.
Sir Stelios became the first, and so far only Monaco resident to join the Giving Pledge, the global movement of philanthropists led by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who have committed to give half their fortunes to a good cause, during their life times or by will.
Stelios’ office from where he runs the easy family of brands and coordinates his charity work is at the Ruscino, 14 quai Antoine, Monaco MC98000. Since 2019 the Monaco foundation has been operating a conference hall on the ground floor of the Ruscino building for various events. The conference hall is made available to other Monaco registered charities to host their charitable events there free of charge.

How does the foundation give its support?
This program, started in 2013, offers each and every working day – without discrimination – snacks to people who register and ask for them. On average we give food to 200,000 people who come to our distribution centres each month.
Each year we offer several bi-communal awards to teams comprising one Turkish Cypriot and one Greek Cypriot, who are cooperating on the island. Each winning team is granted a €10,000 cash prize. Since 2009, the total value of the awards granted to bi-communal collaboration amounts to €3,750.000.
In the event of a major disaster additional funds are directed to alleviate suffering. For example, 505,000€ were given in Nov 2018 to the relatives of 94 people who passed away during the fires outside Athens earlier that summer.
In the UK an award is operated in conjunction with Leonard Cheshire, a charity that focuses on helping disability. Prizes are awarded to those disabled people who have started their own business.
